It's currently 12:05AM and the streets are still occupied. The protest has spread across the harbour onto Kowloon side. Nearly everybody is wearing masks and some form of eye protection to shield themselves from pepper spray and tear gas. The police have threatened and are prepared to use arms against the protesters. The PTU (Police Tactical Unit), a paramilitary riot control unit of the HK Police have been mobilised and are operating in force. Chief Executive CY Leung has yet to issue any statement concerning this massive issue.

Is this a result of the PRC gov asserting itself into Hong Kong?

Yes. As far as I can make out, the PRC government is attempting to influence the HK government by attempting to place/choose its preferred government representatives in the HK government. Thus, this prevents the peoples of Hong Kong from democratically choosing the people they think is best for the future of the country. But don't quote me on that, the issue is so touchy and sensitive that details can be hard to distinguish and make clear.

I hope this won't end well for the Mainlanders! Life under the PRC will never be the same again, and I don't want Hong Kong to be under them!

I know that after the UK gave HK back in 98. The people of HK could self govern for about 50 years. The PRC is trying to accelerate that process. That's my feeling on the situation

Yeah, no prob. I couldn't think off hand if we have any GTers in Hong Kong, and this is a pretty big story. An on-the-ground perspective is an interesting one to be privy to. TwinCharged just asks that we take his posts with a grain of salt because he doesn't have all the information and he's just one person. But still, I'm glad he let me share them.

Be safe over there. Hope the citizens of Hong Kong are able to maintain their independence from the PRC.
